  • Speech before EU foreign ministers, visit to Denmark, Second Congress on Political Prisoners. Weekly updates from Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office: August 25–31

    VISIT TO DENMARK
    On August 28–29, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya visited Denmark to address the Gymnich meeting of EU foreign ministers, as well as representatives of the United Kingdom, Norway, and Iceland. In her speech, she stressed:

    • The release of political prisoners is possible thanks to the joint efforts of the EU and the US;
    • More than 1,300 political prisoners remain in detention;
    • There are no grounds for easing sanctions against Lukashenka;
    • Changes in Belarus are inevitable, and Europe must prepare for a post-Lukashenka Belarus;
    • Supporting Belarus is an investment in European security;
    • Belarus will always be part of Europe and is fighting alongside Ukraine for a common future.

    With Siarhei Tsikhanouski, she also took part in an event at the media house Politiken, where she discussed the release of political prisoners, sanctions, accountability for the regime’s crimes, and support for Ukraine.

    SECOND CONGRESS ON POLITICAL PRISONERS IN BELARUS
    On September 26 and 28, Poland will host the Second Congress on Political Prisoners in Belarus #WithoutJustCause. This two-day event will bring together NGOs, initiatives, political prisoners, and human rights defenders, serving as a platform for dialogue, sharing ideas, and addressing challenges regarding political prisoners in Belarus.

    The event is organized by the Office of Belarus Democratic Forces in the Czech Republic in cooperation with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office, the United Transitional Cabinet, and partner organizations, including the Viasna Human Rights Center, Dissidentby, Volnyja, A Country to Live in Foundation, and the Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House, with the support of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung.

    PRE-SESSION OF THE 50TH SESSION OF THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Legal Affairs, Leanid Marozau, joined an event at the UN Human Rights Council ahead of Belarus’ Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

    In addition to participating in the pre-session, Mr. Marozau held a series of closed meetings with international partners from Lithuania, Latvia, Switzerland, and other countries to discuss the human rights situation, political prisoners, and recent developments and challenges faced by Belarusian society.

    RESTORATION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY
    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya congratulated Belarusians on the Day of the Restoration of Belarus’ Independence: “Even in the hardest circumstances, we do not give up, we do not surrender. We stood together, we defended what was ours – and we will do so again. Because without independence, there is no freedom and no future. Belarus will live as long as the will for independence lives in the hearts of Belarusians”.

    COOPERATION WITH THE LITHUANIAN SEIMAS
    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Parliamentary Cooperation and Constitutional Reform, Anatoli Liabedzka, held meetings with the Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Group “For a Democratic Belarus”, Žygimantas Pavilionis, and the First Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, Juozas Olekas. Discussions covered cooperation within the United for Ukraine network, a possible cooperation agreement between the democratic forces and the Seimas of Lithuania, support for the Belarusian House in Vilnius and the Jakub Kolas museum exhibition, MPs’ participation in Expert Club discussions, an exhibition marking the birthday of Ales Bialiatski, and preparations for the 2026 Kalinowski Conference.

    MEETING WITH THE UNITED TRANSITIONAL CABINET
    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held working discussions with the newly appointed Representative of the United Transitional Cabinet for Economy and Finance, Alisа Ryzhychenka, and Head of the Democratic Belarus Mission in Ukraine, Sviatlana Shatsilina. They discussed priorities for joint work, key tasks for the coming months, and coordination in their respective areas.

    CHANGES IN THE TEAM
    Tatiana Shchyttsova concluded her work as the Advisor on Education and Science in Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office due to personal reasons. During her tenure, she made an important contribution to the activities of the democratic forces and the support of the Belarusian community.
