  • Political prisoners, war in Ukraine, the regime’s crimes, and support for Belarus: Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke at a Politiken event in Denmark

    September 01, 2025

    On August 28, during a visit to Denmark, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Siarhei Tsikhanouski spoke at an event focused on Belarus. The event was co-organized by Politiken.

    The audience of about 150 people included representatives of civil society, diplomats from various countries, journalists, activists, and others interested in the situation in Belarus.

    Key topics of the discussion included:

    • Release of political prisoners, including the recent release of Siarhei Tsikhanouski, as well as steps towards the release of others;
    • The United States’ efforts to secure the release of political prisoners and the democratic forces’ communication with President Trump’s team;
    • European sanctions, their effectiveness, and impact on the Lukashenka regime;
    • Crimes of the regime, including torture, isolation, incommunicado detentions, and prison conditions, as well as the efforts to collect evidence of these crimes;
    • The war in Ukraine and Belarusians’ support for Ukraine.

    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya stressed that there is no single clear scenario for changes in Belarus at the moment, but there is a pressing need to support independent media, human rights defenders, journalists, and cultural initiatives.

    Siarhei Tsikhanouski spoke about his situation, recent release, and plans for further activities.

    Denmark has been actively involved in international Belarus-related initiatives. It has supported several OSCE and UN processes and hosts the International Accountability Platform for Belarus, which gathers evidence of Lukashenka’s crimes.

    Such events help draw international attention to Belarus.
