On August 10, Prague will host the discussion and reflection “1968–1989, 2020–?: A Czech Lesson for Belarus”, organized by the Office of Belarus Democratic Forces in the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Museum of Memory of the 20th Century.
The event marks the sixth anniversary of the protests against dictatorship and violence in Belarus. It invites participants to reflect on Belarus’s experience since 2020 through the lens of Czechoslovakia’s history, which, following the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968, endured more than two decades of “normalization” before culminating in the Velvet Revolution.
The discussion will explore historical parallels between the Czechoslovak and Belarusian experiences, the role of cultural dissent and the concept of the “parallel polis” in preserving civil society under authoritarian rule, as well as opportunities for cooperation between Czech historians and the democratic forces of Belarus.
The event is intended for members of Belarusian and Czech civil society, the expert and academic communities, researchers, diplomats, and everyone interested in the history of democratic transformations in Central and Eastern Europe.
