  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s World Day of Social Justice address

    February 20, 2025

“Justice is more than a legal term or an abstract concept. Justice is the foundation of a democratic and free society that we strive for.

Belarusians know well what injustice is. We see the consequences of inequality and the suppression of rights. Indifference to people breeds repression and oppression. Lack of justice leads to a country where pensions are insufficient even to pay for rent. Where children have to seek tutors because the school curriculum is not enough to pass the centralized exams. Where doctors spend sleepless nights at work to earn pennies. Where people are fired for their political views and arrested for comments on social media.

That is why we should build societies where every voice is heard. Where people do not suffer for their beliefs. Where we are equal in rights and opportunities, regardless of gender, age, or views.

Social justice is about accessible education, feeling safe rather than fearing an encounter with a police squad on the street, and having confidence in our country.

Social justice starts with small steps. With respect for those around us. With standing up for our rights and protecting the rights of others. With solidarity with the people fighting for freedom and justice. With taxes that are spent on support for people with disabilities rather than war. With media that honestly report on existing problems rather than spreading propaganda. With investments in children’s futures, not in the repressive apparatus.

Such a life is not a mere hope but a possible reality that depends on us. Together, we strive to build a country where everyone is confident in their safety and a comfortable future”.
