The Belarusian leader held talks with the new Ambassador of Italy in Vilnius, Emanuele de Maigret. His mandate includes cooperation with the democratic forces of Belarus.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked Italy for supporting civil society initiatives, issuing visas to Belarusians (Italy ranks among the leaders in the number of visas issued), as well as supporting the strategy of pressure on the regime aimed at releasing political prisoners and stopping support for the war.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the situation with political prisoners in Belarus, the simplification of migration procedures, and the mobility of Belarusians, including in view of the closure of several border crossings. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya called for distinguishing between the regime and Belarusians and maintaining passenger traffic with Belarus.
They also discussed organizing an inter-parliamentary conference on Belarus in Rome later this year, and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s participation in the G7 Summit in Capri in April.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. de Maigret and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya discussed holding joint events in Vilnius. The leader invited the ambassador to join the International Day of Solidarity with Belarus on March 25.
