During her visit to Daugavpils, the Belarusian leader launched an exhibition by Belarusian artist Volha Yakubouskaya titled “25 Steps to Freedom”. The characters in this series are cats that embody real people who have left a significant mark on the country’s history during the 2020 events. The event was also attended by representatives of the Belarusian diaspora and the Latvian Association of Belarusians “Supolka”, as well as members of the Saeima from Latgale and the parliamentary group “For a Democratic Belarus”.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya emphasized that Volha Yakubouskaya’s art is a reminder of who Belarusians truly are:
📌 “The images Volha creates are as bright as Belarusians’ aspiration for freedom. It is no coincidence that the Lukashenka regime has declared Volha’s ‘cats’ extremists. Today you can see these ‘dangerous’ images for yourselves… Love, solidarity, and Belarusians’ faith in themselves are something the regime can’t understand and fears. And this is what these paintings reflect. Thank you, Volha, for the sincere Belarusian soul you put into them”.
📍 The exhibition will be open until the end of July at the New East space (18. novembra iela 41A). The exhibition is organized by the Latvian Association of Belarusians “Supolka” and the cultural space “New East” with the support of the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia.
