On March 9, 2025, the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will hold an event in Vilnius to mark the second anniversary of Siarhei Tsikhanouski’s complete isolation. A similar event was held a year ago.
Incommunicado detention is a form of torture that deprives political prisoners of basic rights to communicate with their families, lawyers, and the outside world. Such inhumane punishment has no place in the modern world, just as political persecution itself.
According to the latest data from human rights defenders, at least nine people in Belarus are currently held incommunicado: Aliaksandr Frantskevich, Uladzimir Kniha, Ihar Losik, Andrei Navitski, Mikalai Statkevich, Siarhei Tsikhanouski, Maksim Znak, Mikalai Bankou, and Viktar Babaryka.
It is unknown whether they receive medical assistance or what conditions they are enduring. The March 9 event is an opportunity to both remind the regime of the inevitable justice and show the world that we know our heroes and will continue to fight for their freedom.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will deliver a speech, after which the participants will have the opportunity to:
- speak with the Belarusian leader;
- support political prisoners by signing an appeal to the Belarusian embassy demanding an end to their isolation;
- lay flowers and honor the memory of political prisoners who have died in custody.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “When a person is completely cut off from the world, deprived of even the chance to say ‘I am alive’, it is a horror both for political prisoners and for their loved ones. The regime tries to pretend these people do not exist – no letters, no news, total isolation, as if they are left alone with this injustice. We do not know the conditions they are enduring, but I believe they are holding on. And we must remember them and do everything we can to bring them back to their families as soon as possible”.
