  • “If a ceasefire happens, global attention will return to Belarus”

    May 23, 2025

During her visit to Warsaw, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya took part in a debate titled “Security of Democracy” – the second in a series of discussions under the banner  “A Safe Poland of the Future” (“Bezpieczna Polska Przyszłości”) organized by the Polish Press Agency (PAP). The event brought together representatives of leading Polish media outlets, including TVP Info, Polska Press, and Polskie Radio 24.

In her remarks, Ms. Tsikhanouskaya addressed Belarus’ role in Russia’s aggression and the possible implications of peace negotiations:

“Without Belarus, Putin would never have attempted to capture Kyiv. Without Belarus, Russia would not be able to blackmail Poland and the Baltic States. Without Belarus, Putin would not be able to bypass sanctions.

The peace negotiations on Ukraine that are currently underway could create an entirely new situation. If a ceasefire happens, attention will return to Belarus.

And this situation may develop in one of two directions. Either Russia will attempt to strengthen its control over Belarus, or we will be able to pull it out from under Russia’s influence.

We all want peace. But it must not be built on submission – it must be just and lasting”.
