  • Freedom Day and regional security forum in Kyiv. Weekly updates from Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office: March 23–29

    March 31, 2026

    FREEDOM DAY

March 25 marked the 108th anniversary of the proclamation of the Belarusian Democratic Republic, celebrated by Belarusians as Freedom Day. On this occasion, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya delivered an address, noting that this holiday unites everyone who cares about Belarus, regardless of where they are, as they share a common aspiration to see the country free.

Commemorative events took place in cities around the world. In Vilnius, a rally and march were held, attended by Diplomatic Advisor Dzianis Kuchynski, while Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya herself delivered a video address, thanking Belarusians for their resilience and calling for continued efforts toward freedom.

In Warsaw, on March 27, an official reception dedicated to Freedom Day was held, organized by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus. On March 28, a large-scale march brought together leaders of the democratic forces, with participants carrying a 330-meter white-red-white flag. The event concluded with speeches by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Pavel Latushka.

On March 25, politicians, diplomats, governments of democratic countries, and international organizations expressed solidarity with Belarusians, reaffirming their support and their position toward the Belarusian people and the Lukashenka regime.

“PATH TO FREEDOM” REGIONAL SECURITY FORUM IN KYIV

On Freedom Day, the regional security forum “Path to Freedom” was held in Kyiv, focusing on key aspects of Belarus’ struggle for freedom, the threats posed by the Lukashenka regime, and cooperation between the Belarusian democratic forces, Ukraine, and European partners. The event brought together Ukrainian and Western experts, representatives of the democratic forces, and Belarusian volunteers. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed participants with a welcoming video message.

STATEMENT ON CONDITIONS IN BELARUSIAN PRISONS

On March 26, it was reported that political prisoner Stsiapan Latypau had attempted suicide for the third time. Legal Advisor Leanid Marozau commented on the conditions that lead to such outcomes: “The story of Stsiapan Latypau is another tragic episode and yet another horrifying testimony of what political prisoners in Belarus are systematically subjected to. A third suicide attempt is the result of prolonged, deliberate destruction of human dignity. Punishment cells, strict detention conditions, constant pressure, deprivation of contact with loved ones, lack of basic necessities, humiliation, isolation, and endless penalties — all of this is used as a tool of psychological and physical breaking”.

    COMMENT ON PROPAGANDA IN KINDERGARTENS

On March 22, marking the anniversary of the Khatyn massacre, Belarusian schools were advised to hold a unified lesson on the tragedy of Khatyn. However, its implementation raised concerns. From as early as grades 1–4, children are introduced to detailed accounts of the tragedy, including that 149 people were killed in the fire, among them 75 children, as well as distressing eyewitness testimonies.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Education and Science, Pavel Tereshkovich, noted: “The older the children, the more resistant they are to propaganda. That is why ideology is now being pushed into kindergartens — and that is where it becomes truly alarming. The cult of Aliaksandr Lukashenka is taking on its most grotesque forms — almost resembling North Korea”.

    CONTINUED REPRESSION IN BELARUS

Despite the release of 250 political prisoners, politically motivated persecution continues in Belarus. Leanid Marozau made a statement: “While some are being released, others are being imprisoned and handed harsh sentences. We are seeing new waves of persecution, now against believers, clergy, and women. According to human rights defenders at Dissidentby, as of February 1, 2026, at least 207 people had been identified as facing criminal prosecution on political grounds. Of them, no fewer than 41 are already behind bars. This is a vicious cycle, a system of repression that has nothing to do with law or justice”.

REGISTRATION FOR THE FIFTH CONFERENCE OF THE BELARUSIAN DIASPORA

From May 1 to 2, Warsaw will host the 5th Conference of the Belarusian Diaspora, bringing together representatives of NGOs, initiatives, and the Belarusian diaspora from different countries. Participants can fill out the registration form to participate in the conference, as well as submit their ideas and suggestions for the program via a separate form.
