  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihail Popșoi

    March 07, 2024

During her working visit to Romania, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya participated in the Congress of the European People’s Party, where she met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, Mihail Popșoi.

The Belarusian leader proposed to the minister to enhance cooperation at the diplomatic level and appoint a special envoy or ambassador responsible for contacts with Belarus’ democratic forces. The politicians also discussed Russia’s attempts to destabilize the situation in Transnistria and its threat to Belarus’ sovereignty.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya also drew the minister’s attention to the legalization of stay issues faced by Belarusians in Moldova – particularly those who moved from Ukraine. They discussed issues related to expired Belarusian passports, as well as residence permits, and alien passports. The leader also mentioned several cases where Moldova has denied entry to Belarusians. The politicians agreed to discuss this issue separately.

Following the meeting, Mr. Popșoi and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya discussed a potential joint regional security conference focusing on neutrality and geopolitical challenges.
