  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya established ties with Chile

    January 25, 2025

During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, establishing initial ties with the country. The meeting resulted in agreements on collaboration across various areas.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya expressed gratitude to Mr. van Klaveren for Chile’s support of democratic Belarus in the UN Human Rights Council.

One of the key initiatives discussed was a joint conference on transitional justice and national reconciliation, which could be held at the University of Santiago founded by Ignacy (Ihnat) Domeyko. The conference could facilitate the exchange of experiences of democratic transitions in Chile and other countries in South America and Europe. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya suggested naming the conference after Ignacy (Ihnat) Domeyko, a figure who unites Belarusians and Chileans through his legacy.

The parties also discussed cooperation within the Community of Democracies, with which the United Transitional Cabinet recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The cooperation could address transnational repression used by authoritarian regimes among other issues.

Mr. van Klaveren and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya addressed the importance of holding the Lukashenka regime accountable through the International Criminal Court and establishing connections with other South American countries.
