During her working visit to Estonia, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya attended the seminar “Is studying history dangerous? The case of Belarus”. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of preserving Belarusian history and highlighted its role in shaping the country’s future.
The leader emphasized that both Russia and the Lukashenka regime are systematically trying to erase Belarusian national identity, rewriting the nation’s history and replacing it with a Russian narrative.
“Entire topics, historical periods, and national heroes have fallen victim to repression, censorship, and the ‘russification’ of our collective memory.
The Lukashenka regime uses our history as a weapon. They seek to erase our identity, turning young Belarusians into obedient followers of the imperial narrative.
Belarusian parents tell their children about our true history, about our intellectuals and independence fighters. We are a nation of people who remember, who fight, and who will not allow the truth to be erased.
Being a historian today, uncovering the truth about the past, requires incredible courage. I want to thank all historians who keep our history alive”.
