  • How will democratic transformation change the everyday life of Belarusians?

    March 13, 2024

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s team continues to share the details of the New Belarus Transition Strategy, developed by the Office team together with the United Transition Cabinet, the Coordination Council, and numerous experts. Today we are looking at how the changes outlined in the strategy will affect the key spheres of society’s life.

RESTORATION OF TRUST IN THE STATE

Belarusians will feel safe again. They won’t have to wipe the information from their phones before leaving home, they won’t be interrogated at border crossings, stopped on the streets, or arrested at their workplaces on political grounds. People will be free to speak out on social media (and beyond) and criticize the authorities.

RELEASE OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN POLITICALLY REPRESSED

People who have been persecuted will have their rights restored, be able to return to the country, and be reunited with their families.

    FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

Schengen visas will be available again, making it easier to visit European countries. Air travel to the EU countries will be restored, low-cost carriers will get access to Belarus. Vacation flights and travel will become cheaper and more accessible.

    FREEDOM OF INFORMATION

Belarusians will have access to objective information in independent and international media. Media censorship will be abolished, and the websites covering the political situation in the country will no longer be blocked.

    NEW JOBS AND INCOME GROWTH

Economic reforms will be aimed at developing a knowledge-based economy and creating a favorable environment for business. Administrative barriers to entrepreneurship will be significantly reduced, opening the door for new investments. The state will support international cooperation and the development of infrastructure projects. The main goal is not only to improve the investment climate and the financial condition of the country but also to create new jobs and increase the incomes of Belarusians.

    REPATRIATION OF BUSINESSES

One of the key tasks of the government will be to facilitate the repatriation of large financial projects, representatives of the IT sector, and other business players.

    NEW SOCIAL POLICY

The education sector will receive large-scale investments, while advanced technologies will be introduced into education. Programs that mobilize local communities around local initiatives will also receive funding. The development of a network of non-governmental organizations specializing in helping socially vulnerable groups will be prioritized. Unemployment benefits will also be increased.
