  • Holding Lukashenka accountable for his crimes: Coordination Council hearing

    January 23, 2025

    Today, January 23, the Coordination Council will hold a parliamentary hearing to present an analysis of Lukashenka’s criminal activities during his time in power, alongside a legal qualification of these crimes.

    The hearing will aim to, ahead of the January 26 sham election, draw international attention to Lukashenka’s crimes and outline ways to hold him accountable.

    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will deliver opening remarks. Other speakers will include:

    • Pavel Latushka – leader of the “Latushka Team and Movement for Freedom” faction;
    • Mikhail Kiryliuk – lawyer for the National Anti-Crisis Management;
    • Aliaksandr Rakitski – lawyer who previously worked for the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus.

    The hearing will discuss:

    • Whether all state apparatus employees can be considered accomplices in Lukashenka’s criminal activities;
    • What could resolve the political crisis if Lukashenka and his closest allies are held accountable;
    • How a national dialogue could look in a post-Lukashenka Belarus.

    The session will aim to call on countries and international organizations to:

    • Reject any attempts by the Lukashenka regime to stage an election process that violates the principles of a fair and transparent election.
    • Support Lithuania’s initiative to refer Lukashenka’s crimes to the International Criminal Court for a thorough investigation.
    • Increase pressure on the regime and develop additional tools to prevent the circumvention of existing sanctions.
