A meeting of the Organizing Committee for the Chornobyl Way rallies, dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, has taken place. Representatives of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office, environmental NGOs, and the Belarusian diaspora participated in the meeting.
The Organizing Committee is to define common messages and formats for the events, as well as to coordinate them in different cities around the world.
Forty years have passed since the Chornobyl disaster, which affected millions of people across various countries. Time has passed, but the threat remains. The regime in Belarus is just as irresponsible and unaccountable to society as the Soviet authorities were back then. This is absolutely unacceptable. That is why this year’s campaign will be held under the slogan: “For an Independent and Nuclear-Free Belarus.”
The Organizing Committee will coordinate the Chornobyl Way events worldwide with the participation of the democratic forces, environmental NGOs, and the Belarusian diaspora.
For the first time, on April 26 in Vilnius, a commemorative run will take place, dedicated to the liquidators of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant accident. Through this symbolic run, participants will honor the memory of heroes from Belarus, Ukraine, and Lithuania — those who extinguished fires, carried out decontamination, and built the sarcophagus, sacrificing their health and lives.
In recent years, actions dedicated to the anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster have been held in various countries and organized by Belarusians abroad.
