    January 24, 2024

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, along with representatives of Libereco and the People’s Embassies of Belarus, held an online meeting with the First Minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf. During the conversation, he announced his decision to take patronage for Dzmitryi Halavach, a political prisoner and Tor Band musician, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison by the regime. The Scottish leader became the 400th politician to join the international campaign to support Belarusian political prisoners.

The First Minister expressed hope that by shedding light on the horrors faced by political prisoners, awareness of the pressure on people in Belarus would grow worldwide.

The politicians also discussed support for initiatives that help the families of repressed Belarusians. In particular, the conversation focused on a potential program for the rehabilitation of former political prisoners. In addition, Ms. Tsikhanouskaya called on Mr. Yousaf to invite Belarusians for internships in state institutions and the Parliament as Belarus will need experienced professionals once it becomes democratic.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya paid special attention to strengthening the national identity and culture of Belarus. The leader emphasized that Scotland’s positive experience in reviving its language and culture could serve as an example for Belarusians.
