In Vilnius, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Diplomatic Advisor, Dzianis Kuchynski, held a meeting with the new President of the Nordic Council, Ville Väyrynen. The Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania, Ole Andersen Lindeman, also joined the discussions.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of a conference marking the 35th anniversary of cooperation between the Nordic Council and Lithuania. Dzianis Kuchynski thanked partners for their attention to the current situation in Belarus, as well as for their aid to Belarusian civil society and independent media.
Key topics discussed included:
- integration of the Belarusian democratic agenda into the Nordic Council’s regional and international formats;
- opportunities for representatives of the democratic forces of Belarus to participate in the work of the Nordic Council, enabling a Belarusian delegation to attend sessions and contribute to thematic groups;
- the need for a regular strategic dialogue with the Nordic Council at both parliamentary and governmental levels;
- exchange of experience in parliamentarism and public administration, including possible internships for young Belarusians;
- support for Belarus’ reform agenda and expertise from Nordic countries;
- the work of the International Alliance of Parliamentary Groups “For a Democratic Belarus” and plans to hold its next meeting after London in Oslo;
- parliamentary instruments of solidarity, including patronage for political prisoners.
Dzianis Kuchynski also emphasized that Nordic countries remain among the leaders in supporting Belarus’ democratic community and political prisoners, including through humanitarian initiatives and a consistent stance on maintaining pressure on the regime.
Dzianis Kuchynski: “We count on a long-term partnership with the Nordic Council and are working together toward a more systematic institutionalization of relations — with regular dialogue, joint projects, and greater inclusion of Belarus in the Nordic-Baltic space”.
