Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Legal Affairs, Leanid Marozau, took part in a discussion at the opening of Hamburg Press Freedom Week on October 11. The event focused on the voices of journalists and civil society representatives working under conditions of repression and exile.
Mr. Marozau called independent Belarusian media an important voice of a free Belarus: “Despite repression, criminal prosecution, exile, and constant pressure, independent Belarusian journalists continue their work. They report the truth about what is happening in Belarus, give a voice to political prisoners and their families, document human rights violations, and prevent the regime from concealing its crimes.
Today, independent media are more than just a source of information. They are an essential part of Belarus’s democratic society, maintaining ties between Belarusians inside the country and those living abroad.
That is why international support for independent journalism must remain a priority. Protecting journalists, supporting media outlets in exile, and ensuring the sustainability of independent media are investments in the future of a democratic Belarus”.
