Today, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, alongside Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, took part in the discussion “Beyond Uncertainty: Belarus and Europe’s Security” during a conference at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University. The meeting focused on the future of Belarus and its role in European security.
In her remarks, Sviatlana addressed key topics:
- Democratic future of Belarus
“Though we don’t know what Belarus will look like in five years, I know for certain that we must work every day to strengthen our society, identity, and ties with other countries. The future of Belarus is built not on dreams or plans, but on persistent work — the work of journalists, human rights defenders, and politicians. Only through this work will we achieve a free Belarus. We are building democratic institutions in exile, preparing reforms and specialists, so that at the right moment we can take responsibility”.
- Values and pragmatism in talks with the regime
“The choice between values and pragmatism is a false one. The practice of ‘talks for the sake of convenience’ with Lukashenka has never worked. He sells our sovereignty to Putin in exchange for staying in power. That is why politics must be grounded in values and principles – this is the only realistic path”.
- Support from Lithuania and Belarusians in exile
“We are grateful to Lithuania for providing thousands of Belarusians with a safe refuge. The Belarusian diaspora here is not a burden but an asset. It pays taxes, creates businesses, supports Ukraine, and preserves our culture”.
- Further cooperation
“My main request is simple but urgent – keep Belarus high on the agenda. Belarus is at the very center of the crisis and can become part of the solution. We must be ready for change”.
