On August 25, the day the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Republic was given constitutional status in 1991, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed the Belarusian people:

“Today we have to fight for our independence again. Because now it is under the greatest threat in all recent history.

Our country hosts Russian soldiers and their military bases. Mercenaries with a criminal past who destroy Ukrainian cities and kill civilians. Nuclear weapons that may make Belarus a military target. Instead of relics of Belarusian culture, our museums show the Wagner PMC hammers. And schools take children to prisons and border control facilities instead of Kupala plays at theaters.

It is about time we remind each other what true independence means.”
