  • Yauhen Muravitski, detained during protests in Georgia, is now safe

    December 09, 2024

Yauhen Muravitski, a Belarusian citizen detained on November 30 in Tbilisi and at risk of deportation, has left Georgia and is now safe in Lithuania. This was made possible through the swift efforts of Lithuanian human rights defenders, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office, the United Transitional Cabinet, and Belarusian human rights organizations.

Following his detention, Mr. Muravitski spent two days in custody, where he was charged with “insulting a police officer”, an accusation he denied. After his release on December 2, Yauhen, supported by Belarusian human rights defenders in Tbilisi, applied for asylum in Georgia. However, after assessing all potential risks, Mr. Muravitski decided to relocate to Lithuania.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s team prepared supporting documents for Yauhen. At the same time, coordinated efforts with the United Transitional Cabinet’s Representative for Social Policy, Volha Zazulinskaya, and Lithuanian human rights defenders ensured the processing of Mr. Muravitski’s visa. As a result, he left Georgia and arrived in Lithuania, where he will receive the necessary support.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office extends its deep gratitude to the Lithuanian government and the Lithuanian Embassy in Tbilisi for their assistance and calls for international solidarity in protecting Belarusians facing political persecution.
