The US presidential election has concluded, with Republican candidate Donald Trump headed confidently toward victory. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has congratulated him:
“Congratulations on your resounding victory in the US presidential election. I look forward to continuing and enhancing our cooperation with the US to bring freedom to Belarus. The US will always be a key ally for us as we fight to free our country from tyranny”.
Ms. Tsikhanouskaya explains what the election results mean for Belarusians and Belarus:
- “This was an exciting electoral race. I followed it with a bit of envy, as Belarusians have been deprived of the right to elect their leaders for many years. It’s truly a great privilege not to know who the next president will be. It’s this kind of election — lively, dynamic, emotional, but above all transparent and fair — that we would like to see in Belarus”.
- “We will work with the new administration, continuing and strengthening our relations. Of course, we have contacts with Donald Trump’s circle and the Republican Party. The issue of Belarus unites different politicians in the US, regardless of party affiliation”.
- “We expect a decisive, consistent, and principled US policy toward Belarus. Belarus must remain on the international agenda, and American leadership plays a vital role here. We anticipate continued cooperation between the democratic forces of Belarus and the United States, including through the Strategic Dialogue. The US has been, is, and will remain our ally in the struggle for a democratic, independent, and peaceful Belarus”.
