  • “Through prism of propaganda, young people are perceived as objects subject to control and manipulation”: Marharyta Vorykhava’s comment on regime’s propaganda film

    May 02, 2024

Another propaganda film has been released on a regime-controlled TV channel. It accuses students of the Belarusian National Technical University of “terrorism and collaboration with foreign intelligence services”. In a video address, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Youth Policy and Students, Marharyta Vorykhava, notes: We are witnessing yet another example of how the regime uses the media to incite hostility and manipulate public opinion.

“The film portrays the youth as people who “easily succumb to influence” and require constant control. It depicts them as unstable and vulnerable, creating an image of people incapable of making responsible decisions. Such an approach not only diminishes the dignity and independence of young people but also restricts their right to freedom of thought and self-expression. Through the prism of propaganda, young people are perceived not as full-fledged participants in public dialogue but as objects subject to control and manipulation.

Moreover, by using the label “easily influenced”, one can justify repression, censorship, and surveillance. This creates an atmosphere of fear, where every step feels monitored, while any action or statement can be interpreted as “destructive” or contradictory to the state ideology”.
