A rally for the Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners took place in Vilnius. May 21 will mark 4 years since political prisoner Vitold Ashurak died behind bars at the hands of the regime.
Participants honored the memory of the people who died in prison and expressed solidarity with everyone who remains imprisoned. A symbolic run was held in support of political prisoners before the rally.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya joined the rally and addressed Belarusians:
“Vitold Ashurak believed that change would come soon – let us believe in it too and continue the fight. Because the easiest thing to do is give in to despair and give up. But we cannot afford such a ‘luxury’. And the more we do, the sooner change will come.
I want to speak to Belarusians inside the country. Dear friends, I know how hard it is for you. But now is not the time for despair. I know you don’t believe the propaganda, you don’t believe the regime, and you are still waiting for change. And change will definitely come. We are doing everything we can to bring it closer and to free political prisoners in our country”.
