Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “It is heartbreaking to learn about the death of Alena Pankova. She was only 54.
Alena was convicted for participating in protests and was serving a sentence of restricted freedom: living under a strict schedule and constant supervision. In such conditions, the simplest things can be difficult to do, including taking care of one’s health, because even a routine visit to a doctor requires permission and approval for every step. It is hard to imagine, but this is the daily reality for people punished for their civic stance.
I express my sincere condolences to Alena’s family and loved ones, and especially to her 18-year-old son. I wish you strength during this difficult time”.
