  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Speech at the European People’s Party Congress in Valencia

    April 30, 2025

    Dear Congress,

Russia is turning my country, Belarus, into a military outpost. Deploying nuclear weapons. Militarizing industry. Massive drills – Zapad – are expected this fall. Last time, with such drills the full-scale invasion started. Thousands of Russian troops will gather, again, near the Lithuanian and Polish border.

And yet, Belarus is barely mentioned in any peace talks.

Peace talks will shape the future not only of Ukraine. It’s about the entire European neighborhood, including Belarus, Moldova, Georgia or Armenia.

To Putin, we are like naughty children, to be punished and returned “home”. But we are sovereign European nations. And we have the right to decide our future for ourselves.

We got enough of Russian imperialism, and domination.

We must not let Putin divide Europe again. No more zones of influence. No more Yaltas. We won’t accept deals over our heads.

All of us want peace. But peace must not be a temporary solution. It must be just, and long lasting. And it won’t be possible without a free and democratic Belarus.

As president Zelensky rightly said, the eastern border of Belarus is the eastern border of Europe too. It is not just a geographic line. It is Europe’s frontier.

We must defend Europe as a whole, as our common space of values. This is our Europe too.

And we, Belarusians, are ready to contribute. Military power alone means nothing without people – people ready to defend their values.

Supporting free Belarus is a strategic investment. It is a deterrence against Putin’s ambitions.

As dictators unite, we must stand united too.

We must abandon illusions that Putin and Lukashenka want peace. They don’t. War fuels their regimes, justifies their repression. And we must not step back.

If we give up Ukraine, give up Crimea, Belarus—Putin won’t stop. He will go further.

    Dear EPP friends,

To me, the European People’s Party is the embodiment of everything we fight for.

We cherish your solidarity. We applaud your courage. President Von Der Leyen, President Metsola, Manfred, Prime Minister Tusk, Minister Tajani… Thank you!

There are no small steps. Like your assistance to our movement – journalists, activists, repressed.

Like writing cards to political prisoners, led by Roberta Metsola and Andrzej Halicki.

Like support for Belarusian EPP family members – United Civic Party, Christian Democracy, Movement For Freedom.

Or today’s resolution on Belarus – every action matters.

Despite threats and terror, we keep going. For our rightful place in the European family of nations.

Yes, we are not always in the headlines. But we are here. Fighting. Resisting. Risking our freedom—so that one day, we may share yours.

Жыве Беларусь. Slava Ukraini. Long live Europe.
