  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Constitution Day address

    March 15, 2025

“Today, Belarus marks Constitution Day – a moment to reflect on the freedom, security, and justice this legal document is meant to uphold. The very essence of a constitution is to protect citizens from police arbitrariness, ensure the peaceful transition of power, and guarantee freedom of speech. Yet, for years, the regime has turned our Constitution into a convenient tool, rewriting, ignoring, and weaponizing it against the people.

The Belarusian Constitution is full of contradictions. It enshrines the right to life, yet Belarus remains the last country in Europe to enforce the death penalty. It declares that all citizens are equal before the law, yet the president enjoys immunity from criminal prosecution. It promises freedom of expression, yet the authorities imprison pensioners for comments on social media.

The unchecked powers granted to the president eliminate any balance of power or democratic governance. Parliament, the Constitutional Court, and referendums – a single individual ultimately controls everything. A constitution should serve as a safeguard for citizens’ rights, serving the people rather than those in power.

This day will truly become a celebration when laws protect citizens instead of being used for repression. When our country has an independent judiciary, fair elections, and equal rights for all. When Belarus becomes a free and democratic nation. And with every effort we make together, we bring that day closer. Lawlessness cannot last forever – justice and respect for human rights will prevail.

Together, we will build a country where the constitution is honored, upheld, and truly serves its people”.
