    April 16, 2024

    During her working visit to Canada, the Belarusian leader met with the Speakers of the House of Commons and the Senate, the leaders of the group “For a Democratic Belarus”, as well as opposition leaders.

    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked Canadian partners for their support and solidarity. She was pleased to note that the Belarus issue unites various political forces in the Canadian parliament – both the government party and the opposition.

    During the meetings, the following issues were discussed:

    • the military and political situation in Belarus;
    • the situation with political prisoners;
    • sanctions;
    • support for the repressed and independent media;
    • accountability for the regime;
    • issues of the Belarusian diaspora in Canada.

    The Belarusian leader called on Canadian partners to:

    • join the Belarus friendship group;
    • take symbolic godparenthood of political prisoners;
    • hold meetings with diaspora representatives to address the legalization of stay issues;
    • organize a hearing on Belarus;
    • visit Vilnius and Warsaw to meet with former political prisoners, human rights defenders, and media representatives;
    • organize solidarity days with Belarus.

    Additionally, Ms. Tsikhanouskaya asked MPs to support Belarus in the OSCE and NATO parliamentary assemblies.

    Moreover, the leader held a meeting with the shadow Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs – leaders of the Conservative Party, continuing her dialogue with Foreign Minister Joly and Prime Minister Trudeau, who represent the governing Liberal Party of Canada.
