Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has sent an official appeal to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, requesting his support and a fast-track process for the adoption of the law that would define the legal status of Belarusian volunteer fighters in Ukraine.
Work on the draft law began back in March following a roundtable in Kyiv, in which Belarus’ democratic forces participated. The discussion also included Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of President Zelenskyy, as well as members of the Verkhovna Rada and the Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs.
The law aims to address several pressing issues, from obtaining citizenship and legal status to matters of financial and social support.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office is closely monitoring the situation and is well aware of the challenges Belarusian volunteer fighters face in Ukraine. To help speed up the resolution of these issues, we maintain ongoing communication with Ukrainian authorities.
The appeal to President Zelenskyy is another step toward expediting the process. We hope that with the help of our Ukrainian partners, we can achieve a positive outcome on these matters.
