  • Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau held talks with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya

    April 16, 2024

This was the politicians’ second bilateral meeting in Canada. This time it took place at the PM’s office in Ottawa.

Mr. Trudeau expressed support for Belarus’ democratic forces and civil society and inquired about the fate of political prisoners, as well as the situation with Belarusian media.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke about the work of the democratic forces and called on Canada to cooperate more closely with the United Transitional Cabinet.

The parties discussed pressure on the Lukashenka regime and talked about its attempts to lift restrictions on potash exports, which are a significant source of its revenue.

The Belarusian leader highlighted the issue that arms and components produced in Belarus ultimately end up with the Russian army.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya asked Mr. Trudeau to raise the issue of Belarus during Canada’s presidency of the G7, invite democratic forces to the G7 Summit in Canada, and support Belarus at the UN and OSCE.
