  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s address on the anniversary of the Declaration of Sovereignty of Belarus

    July 27, 2025

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “July 27, 1990, was the day Belarusians declared: We have the right to our own state. Thirty-five years have passed since the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty, which reflected our people’s intention and their will to live by their own rules.

Today, when the country is ruled by a pro-Russian regime and independence is being lost with every new signature under Kremlin agreements, this historical event is more than just a date – it’s a reminder. A reminder that no one gets independence by chance, and it is not granted forever. It must be defended.

A Belarus subordinate to a foreign will is not what the Supreme Council voted for in 1990. And it is not what the country needs today. Laws in our country must be made in the interest of its citizens, not in the interest of one man or a foreign power. The future must be determined by the will of the people, not backroom deals behind closed doors.

This is the Belarus we must continue to fight for – a free Belarus. Sovereignty and its preservation are not just a few lines in an archived document – they are our responsibility. And fulfilling that responsibility depends on every one of us”.
