On April 2, the regime in Belarus celebrates the so-called Day of Unity of the Peoples of Russia and Belarus.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “For years, we have heard about new agreements between Russia and Belarus under the so-called Union State Treaty. Just in the past six months, we’ve seen compulsory job assignments of Belarusian graduates to Russia, a security guarantees agreement, and joint military exercises of the ‘brotherly nations’. One dictatorial regime clings to another as its only pillar of power, paying for this alliance with independence, freedom, and human lives.
Under the guise of ‘brotherhood’, propaganda spreads lies about security, stability, and shared culture – while outside, war, repression, and complete subjugation to the Kremlin’s interests continue. The Lukashenka regime has alienated every neighbor except one and now has no choice but to follow Moscow in everything. Every step this regime takes toward Putin pushes Belarus closer to dissolving into Russia.
But we, Belarusians, did not choose this. We do not need alliances that cost lives and erase our national identity. Time and again, we have shown that we can create artistic masterpieces known worldwide. Build an economy independent of loans. Educate new scientists and innovators who work for peace and the future – not war and propaganda.
Pass on our traditions and culture to your children. Support Belarusian musicians, poets, writers, and artists. Among all that is Belarusian, find something that speaks to your soul. Believe me, no union in the world is worth losing all of this”.
