  • New Belarus Transition Strategy: Why is it relevant?

    December 15, 2023

A change of power in authoritarian regimes does not always lead to democracy. As historical practices in Haiti, Syria, North Korea, and several other countries have shown, a dictatorship is often replaced by another dictatorship.

This is why Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office, together with the United Transitional Cabinet, the Coordination Council, and numerous experts, has developed and presented the New Belarus Transition Strategy to public discussion. This document outlines paths for a democratic transition of power from dictatorship to democracy. The key reform vectors identified in the Strategy contribute to making the transition smooth and easy for the new government.

Why is the strategy important now?

    1. It allows the democratic forces to prepare for various scenarios of the transition of power.
    2. It simplifies the organization of key processes within the state.
    3. The strategy outlines the essential steps for implementing reforms, similar to how Eastern European countries successfully implemented reforms after the Iron Curtain’s fall.

Every Belarusian can influence the provisions of the document. The discussions are open and everyone is invited to express their views, thoughts, proposals, and criticism.

Every voice is crucial for the New Belarus Transition Strategy project. Every Belarusian plays a key role in laying the foundation for democracy and freedom together. The document’s text is available at the link in Belarusian and Russian. Questions or suggestions are accepted through the @AskOffice_Bot Telegram bot and the New Belarus platform.
