  • “For Belarus to matter to others, it must first matter to us”

    January 26, 2025

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed the “Belarusians Deserve Better” Forum in Warsaw, calling for unity, emphasizing the importance of struggle inside Belarus, and expressing gratitude to Belarusians for their dedication and support.

Below are the key points of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s speech:

📌 Why Belarus must remain on the global agenda
“In a world full of events, as much as we’d like it, the world cannot focus solely on Belarus. But through our actions, our work, and our energy, we must bring ourselves back to the global agenda. For Belarus to matter to others, It must first matter to us. We have stories to tell. We have things to show. We have reasons to be proud”.

📌 What Belarusians do despite the regime’s obstacles
“We are building democratic institutions. Human rights defenders are helping the repressed and gathering evidence of the regime’s crimes. Belarusians in exile are advancing the Belarusian agenda and holding solidarity rallies. Independent media and bloggers are exposing the regime’s lies and manipulations. Tech professionals are creating innovative projects that unite Belarusians and impress the world. Our cultural figures are strengthening national identity. And our youth is increasingly energized by their Belarusian identity”.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya also expressed special gratitude to Belarusians who continue the fight within the country and highlighted the heroism of Belarusian volunteer fighters defending Ukraine and Belarus. She called for remembering and honoring the victims, such as Maryia Zaitsava, and turning the pain of thinking about political prisoners into energy for continued struggle.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “When bad news drains your last bit of strength and it seems like everything has lost meaning, we must remember that the path we are walking now is one we are walking for the first time. Sometimes we don’t know what will work and what won’t. But we must try. Do. Experiment. Support good causes. Notice the positive. Praise and inspire each other. Today is a good time to do this”.
