  • “Now is a good time to look at what we can do together to strengthen Belarusian–Lithuanian relations”

    December 02, 2024

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya delivered opening remarks at the conference “Belarus–Lithuania: Into the Future Through Shared Values” in Vilnius, aiming to foster dialogue for Belarus’ European integration, identify effective ways to combat disinformation, and enhance  Belarus–Lithuania cooperation.

In her speech, the Belarusian leader called for working together to address current challenges in bilateral relations and proposed four ways to strengthen these ties:

First, we must not allow dictators to sow discord between Belarusians and Lithuanians, which is precisely what they aim to do. The Lukashenka regime seeks vulnerabilities to undermine our solidarity. We must stand united against provocations.

Second, we need to foster mutual understanding. Let’s organize discussions between experts and intellectuals, host cultural events, translate literature, share stories, and engage with the media to build bridges between our peoples.

Third, let’s facilitate cooperation and integration. Belarusians integrate quickly but many are relocating to other countries due to visa or other challenges. While some issues are being resolved, Belarusians are not always treated fairly. Formalities or even a minor detail in someone’s background can lead to refusals [in granting residency].

Fourth, let’s defend European values and our European future together and coordinate our messages on the international stage”.
