  • Belarus’ security in focus at a side event in Prague ahead of the Zapad-2025 military exercises

    September 09, 2025

Yesterday, on Belarusian Military Glory Day, a side event titled “Orsha’s Legacy: Response of Democratic Belarus to Zapad-2025” took place in Prague as part of the Czech Eastern Policy Conference 2025.

The event brought together representatives of the Belarusian democratic community and Czech experts to discuss the stationing of Russian troops in Belarus, the rehearsal of nuclear strike scenarios, and the consequences of the upcoming Zapad-2025 exercises scheduled for September 12–16.

The Director of the Office of Belarus Democratic Forces in the Czech Republic, Kryścina Šyjanok, delivered opening remarks. She highlighted the symbolic significance of the Battle of Orsha for the contemporary struggle of the Belarusian people.

The discussion also featured contributions from AMO Research Fellow Michal Lebduška; First Deputy Chairman of the Rada of the Belarusian Democratic Republic, Siarhei Navumchyk, who held a memorial ceremony in honor of Belarusian volunteer fighter Maryia Zaitsava; and the Head of the Kosciuszko Institute for Security Studies, Vadim Mojeiko.

Two key documents were presented during the discussion: “Zapad-2025: Under the Fog of Exercises” and the Red Paper, which examines Belarus within the broader context of regional security.
