Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Today is Constitution Day, which celebrates the constitution that has been illegally rewritten several times over the past 28 years. The constitution whose articles have been systematically violated by the regime, except perhaps for Article 20: Minsk is the capital of Belarus. The constitution that has long lost its meaning.
Unfortunately, today is not a day to celebrate, but a day to remind ourselves of how much we have already done on the path to reclaiming our constitutional rights. And how much more we have to do to ensure that all of our country's laws work to protect Belarusians, rather than becoming an instrument of repression against the people.
Democratic forces already have a vision of what the Constitution of the new Belarus should look like. We must do much more than just create another document with mere words that every official can ignore for their own interests. We must restore value to this document, prepare a constitution to protect us from dictatorship, guarantee everyone's rights and freedoms, and establish democratic checks and balances. And today, I want to invite everyone to join the discussion of the project of the Constitution of the new Belarus on the website: kanstytucyja.online.
I know that democratic changes in our country are inevitable, no matter how much the regime tries to convince us otherwise. Right now, we are approaching the time when Belarus will become a free and democratic country.
Long live Belarus!”
