  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session: strategy for political prisoners release, action against nuclear weapons stationing in Belarus, accountability for the regime

    May 23, 2023

During the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session in Luxembourg, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with parliamentary delegations from Canada, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. All meetings focused on the strategy for countering the stationing of nuclear weapons in Belarus, achieving the release of political prisoners, and responding to the regime's involvement in the displacement of Ukrainian children from occupied territories.

As a result of the meetings, a group of Friends of Belarus will be formed in Luxembourg's parliament, the Chamber of Deputies. Portugal will consider establishing such a group, too. Also, in the session's final declaration, parliamentarians of the alliance's member states expressed their determination “to hold accountable the Russian regime, its co-aggressors in the Belarusian regime.” This is an important milestone in bringing Lukashenka and his supporters to account.

During the meeting with the President of the NATO PA, Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya discussed holding hearings on Belarus during the NATO PA's Autumn Session and establishing a contact group between the PA and the Belarusian democratic community.
