On May 7, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya attended a screening in Warsaw of “Under the Grey Sky”, a film by Belarusian director Mara Tamkovich. The film tells the story of journalist Katsiaryna Andreyeva and her husband, journalist Ihar Ilyash. It was the first screening attended by the recently released journalist. Ihar Ilyash remains behind bars.
Following the screening, Mara Tamkovich and Katsiaryna Andreyeva held a discussion with the audience, speaking not only about the film itself but also about choice, solidarity, and the fates of Belarusians and Belarus.
Katsiaryna Andreyeva handed Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya Ihar’s photograph and thanked the Belarusian leader.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “‘Under the Grey Sky’ is not only a story about Katsia and Ihar. It is the story of thousands of Belarusians who have gone through fear, separation, imprisonment, and injustice. It was painful and difficult to watch. The story of Katsia and Ihar feels very close to me. I understand what she is going through now while he remains in prison.
More than 20 journalists are still imprisoned alongside Ihar, deprived of their freedom simply for doing their work and telling the truth. That is why we must continue speaking about political prisoners and do everything possible to secure their release.
Thank you to Mara for this moving and important film. And thank you to everyone who continues to speak about contemporary Belarus and repression through art, cinema, and culture”.
The screening was attended by Belarusians living in Warsaw, Polish viewers, foreign diplomats, partners, the management of Belsat TV, as well as Pavel Latushka and other representatives of the United Transitional Cabinet.
