The fourth meeting of the “Professionally About the Current Issues” Expert Club was held in Warsaw. The topic was “Constitution Day Through the Lens of Challenges and Prospects”.
More than 25 representatives of political structures, civic initiatives, and the expert community took part in the discussion. They included:
- Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya;
- Artsiom Brukhan, Speaker of the Coordination Council;
- Andrei Vardamatski, political analyst;
- Yevhen Mahda, political scientist;
- representatives of the United Civic Party, the For Freedom Movement, BSDP (Hramada), the Belarusian Popular Front, independent media, and civic initiatives.
The discussion was moderated by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Parliamentary Cooperation and Constitutional Reform, Anatoli Liabedzka.
In her remarks, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya noted that the restoration of a democratic Belarus is impossible without respect for the Constitution and systematic preparation for constitutional reform:
“If laws are the language spoken by the state, then the Constitution is a kind of primer – the first book for any politician in power. Without it, there is no understanding of everything else. Only where the Constitution is respected can there be order and genuine development.
The seizure of the state from the people began with the seizure of the Constitution. That is why we – those who have set the goal of restoring democracy in Belarus – cannot ignore the issue of the Constitution and the need for future constitutional reform”.
Participants agreed on the need to begin preparing the constitutional and legislative foundations of a future democratic Belarus.
