  • Leanid Marozau and Ales Bialiatski met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk

    March 12, 2026

On March 12, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Chairman of the Viasna Human Rights Center, Ales Bialiatski, and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Legal Advisor, Leanid Marozau, met in Geneva with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.

The meeting focused on the current state of human rights in Belarus, including the situation of political prisoners, as well as international mechanisms for protecting fundamental rights and freedoms.

The participation of Ales Bialiatski, who was recently released from prison, was particularly significant. He spoke to High Commissioner Türk about the situation of people in Belarus, particularly those who remain behind bars. Mr. Bialiatski called for continued attention from the international community to the grave situation in the country.

Leanid Marozau stressed the importance of human rights monitoring mechanisms on Belarus within the UN system. These mechanisms remain a key tool for independently documenting violations, maintaining international attention on the situation in the country, and upholding universal human rights standards.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office thanks High Commissioner Türk and his team for the open dialogue and their consistent work in defending human rights.
