Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the new President of the Bundestag, Julia Klöckner, in Berlin today.
Ms. Tsikhanouskaya spoke about the current political situation in Belarus: the ongoing repression, restrictions on independent journalists, cultural initiatives, and civil society organizations. She also highlighted the size of the Belarusian diaspora in Germany and its significant contribution to supporting Belarusian culture and promoting democratic values.
Ms. Tsikhanouskaya thanked President Klöckner for supporting the establishment of the Parliamentary Group “For Democratic Belarus”, which will be launched during her visit. She emphasized that the group will become an important platform for systematic, long-term cooperation with the democratic forces of Belarus and will help keep the Belarusian issue on the political agenda of Germany and the EU.
President Klöckner and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya discussed efforts to free political prisoners and agreed to continue cooperation between the Bundestag and the institutions of Belarus’ democratic forces.
Ms. Tsikhanouskaya thanked Ms. Klöckner for her personal attention to the Belarusian cause and for Germany’s unwavering solidarity with the Belarusian people.
Julia Klöckner assured her that the Bundestag will continue to support democratic Belarus, political prisoners, and civil society, and is ready to further develop cooperation with the democratic forces of Belarus.
