Today, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Legal Affairs, Leanid Marozau, presented the Concept for the Application of the Institute of Lustration in Belarus in Prague.
The presentation was supported by the Office of Belarus Democratic Forces in the Czech Republic and its Director Kryścina Šyjanok. The event was attended by diplomats from Portugal, Ukraine, and Finland, guests from Poland, and a representative of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among others. One of the guests had written and defended a bachelor’s thesis in Prague on the topic of lustration for Belarus.
The Office’s Legal Team presented in detail the key provisions of the Concept and a potential model for its application during a future democratic transition in Belarus. They also conducted a briefing on the human rights situation in Belarus and ongoing work to secure the release of political prisoners. The discussion included international experience and possible scenarios for implementing lustration mechanisms in the Belarusian context.
Leanid Marozau emphasized: “Lustration is not a tool of revenge but a step toward restoring trust and building a new system based on law and responsibility. The discussions of the Concept with diplomats show that the international community shares Belarusians’ aspiration for justice”.
The event took place on 12 November, coinciding with the tragic anniversary of Raman Bandarenka’s death (01.08.1989—12.11.2020).
