A press conference was held in the Lithuanian Seimas with the participation of recently released political prisoners Dzmitry Kuchuk, Mikalai Dziadok, and Larysa Shchyrakova, as well as Speaker Juozas Olekas and members of the group “For a Democratic Belarus” Ruslanas Baranovas and Tomas Tomilinas.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Parliamentary Cooperation and Constitutional Reform, Anatoli Liabedzka, thanked the former political prisoners for taking part in the meeting. He emphasized that the conference proves that Lithuania truly cares about what is happening in Belarus.
Anatoli Liabedzka: “At the level of the Seimas, there is an understanding that a democratic, European Belarus is crucial for the security of Lithuania. The participation of Speaker Juozas Olekas confirms that the issue of political prisoners in Belarus is a parliamentary priority. Strong words of support were voiced for Mikalai Statkevich and all those who remain behind bars. Events like this help keep the issue of political prisoners in Belarus on the agenda of international bodies and influence political decisions both in Lithuania and in the European Union”.
The event was organized by the parliamentary group “For a Democratic Belarus” and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office.
