Exactly 33 years ago, a tragedy occurred at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border in Medininkai. On July 31, 1991, Soviet forces attacked a border checkpoint, killing seven Lithuanian border guards and seriously injuring one.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya attended the ceremony alongside representatives of the Lithuanian authorities and diplomatic missions to honor the memory of the victims.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “The events that occurred in Medininkai were the final vengeful acts of the Soviet system against Lithuania, vile murders that demonstrated the complete immorality of the Soviet system. This tragedy testifies to the great courage of Lithuanians who, despite the danger, defended their country. Lithuania was the first to blaze a trail towards liberation from imperial clutches and became an example for other countries in their pursuit of independence, including Belarus”.
The Belarusian leader emphasized that this visit signifies the solidarity between the peoples of Belarus and Lithuania in their quest for freedom.
