The UN Human Rights Council has extended the mandates of the Special Rapporteur and the Group of Independent Experts on Belarus for another year. This decision confirms that the international community has no intention of turning a blind eye to the ongoing terror and legal arbitrariness in Belarus.
Despite the complete lack of cooperation from Minsk and the regime’s attempts to obstruct international mechanisms, the collection of evidence on human rights violations will continue. This work lays the foundation for future justice and the inevitable accountability of those responsible.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Legal Affairs, Leanid Marozau: “The extension of the UN mandates sends a clear signal to the regime: the world is documenting every crime you commit. Repression in Belarus is becoming increasingly sophisticated, shifting beyond physical violence into the legal field. Torture, inhumane conditions of detention, and the deprivation of fundamental rights have become systemic practices.
The work of independent UN experts is critical to overcoming the climate of impunity. Every violation, every unlawful sentence, and every instance of administrative pressure is being documented in line with international standards.
We will continue our close cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms and thank the EU delegation for its initiative, as well as all 28 countries that supported the resolution. This is an important step in our shared effort to restore the rule of law in Belarus”.
