  • Tatiana Shchyttsova: “It’s even harder for Belarusian scholars to find support than for Russian scholars”

    June 17, 2024

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Education and Science, Tatiana Shchyttsova, participated in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s Luxembourg Solutions Conference. The professor spoke at the panel “Access to Education”, dedicated to advancing the Belarusian academic community in exile within the Council of Europe member states.

Here are the key points from Tatiana Shchyttsova’s speech:

📌 “Academic repressions in Belarus and the forced emigration of scholars and educators from the country continue. Europe and the international community are little aware of these repressions”.

📌 “International support for Belarusian scholars in exile has so far been relatively modest and has primarily consisted of short-term assistance. In many European countries, it is even harder for Belarusian scholars to find support than it is for Russian scholars”.

📌 “We need more systematic and long-term support to preserve the intellectual resources of the Belarusian academic community. We should support the sciences that are degrading in Belarus due to ideological pressure and international isolation. This primarily concerns social and humanitarian sciences”.

📌 “It is crucial to facilitate the integration of Belarusian scientists into the European academic space to change perceptions about Belarus and the Eastern European region as a whole”.
