  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Women in politics are more effective in the long run”

    March 05, 2024

The Belarusian leader is currently in Bulgaria on her first working visit to the country. On Monday, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya joined a broadcast in the studio of the Bulgarian National Radio, where she shared her vision of the role of women in modern politics and noted that the future of Belarus stems from the democratic forces, not the regime.

Here are the most notable quotes from the interview.

📌 “I am convinced that women in politics are more effective in the long run. Since we realized that our fight in Belarus would be a marathon, not a sprint, women have mobilized and taken key positions in organizations and the media. We have proven that women are more sensitive to what people feel”.

📌 “Women defy ‘realpolitik’. Women are concerned for the future of their children and seek peaceful solutions to problems. Men, who rush into fights, sometimes criticize us for indecisiveness and say, ‘Stop playing with balloons and flowers, it’s time to take up arms’. But I believe that if a democratic transition is achieved peacefully, it is more enduring”.

📌 “It is very important for us that Bulgaria, a country that has a voice in the European Union, understands that the future of Belarus stems from the democratic forces, while Lukashenka is a dead end. We need your voice. I am convinced that the Bulgarian government understands that a democratic Belarus serves the interests not only of Belarusians but also of all of Europe”.
