On June 16–17, Stockholm is hosting the Women Empowerment and Democracy for Belarus Forum 2025 — an international platform focused on the role of Belarusian women in the struggle for democracy. Participants are discussing political leadership, human rights protection, and the upcoming Women’s Leadership Program for Belarus – a practical step toward strengthening women’s voices in the country’s future.
In her opening remarks, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya highlighted how women have become the moral foundation of the revolution:
“After our victory in the election was stolen, Belarusian women changed the course of history. They stood up to one of the harshest dictatorships – but not out of political ambition. They did not come out with weapons or slogans of hatred. They came with dignity, courage, and love – for their country and their people.
Nina Bahinskaya, 73, stood alone waving a flag in front of riot police. Despite numerous detentions, she kept showing up at rallies. Fearless. Unbreakable.
Katsiaryna Andreyeva reported the truth from the front lines until the regime silenced her by sentencing her to eight years in prison.
Maryia Kalesnikava tore up her passport at the border to stay and fight for her country. She is held incommunicado, with no contact with the outside world.
Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, a mother who looked her prison guards in the eyes. Tortured, yet still unbroken.
Maryia Zaitsava was wounded by a police grenade in Minsk, and two years later went to fight for Ukraine. She was just 24 when she gave her young life for the freedom of both our nations.
These women are not just symbols. They are the spirit of our revolution”.
Tomorrow, the forum will feature two panels: “Women as a Political and Social Force in Belarus: Challenges and Lessons” and “Pathways to Further Empowerment and Participation: Political Decisions and Implementation”.
