During the meeting, the President of the Belgian Senate, Stephanie D’Hose, showed great interest in the situation in Belarus. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke in detail about the crackdown in the country, which continues unabated.
The parties discussed interparliamentary cooperation, particularly within the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which can help hold the Belarusian regime accountable for its involvement in the illegal displacement of Ukrainian children.
Ms. D’Hose and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya talked about a potential statement by the Belgian Senate. The Belgian side expressed interest in adopting a resolution on the aforementioned issues.
The parties also touched upon Belgium’s future presidency in the European Union, during which the country could invite Belarusian democratic forces to EU events.
“This was Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s first meeting with Stephanie D’Hose, but the meeting had a truly warm atmosphere and, at the same time, was very dynamic and practical in content”, noted Valery Kavaleuski, the Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet and Representative for Foreign Affairs, who was present at the meeting.
The meeting also involved Vladzimir Astapenka, the Deputy Representative for Foreign Affairs of the Cabinet and Head of the Mission of Democratic Belarus in Brussels.
